It is still very widely used for this application. However, maxi-scooters, with engines from 250 to 800 cc, have been developed for Western markets. While the ability to modify and add storage to these vehicles is useful, they are mainly used for high gas mileage and short distance stealthy travel. They also come in a wide variety of electrically powered versions.
